In the ocean depths, bodies may fall down or up; in distant space they do not fall at all;
In a candle’s shapely flame, atoms create light by sharing outer orbiting atomic electrons;
In huge circular racetracks, violent collisions of fast-moving atomic nuclei reveal exotic constituents.
We cloak all such inexplicables with mental constructs and numbers.

God cannot reveal more of himself.  Our pretentious freedom could not abide his gentleness,
his soft voice, possibly his playfulness; we would emphatically protest his long silences,
and most assuredly his neglect of pain and vicious evil.

The zealous desire to understand the workings of nature can be a heady intoxicant, a bright light that attracts skilled minds to singe their wings like poor moths.  No longer can they soar free in the fragrant breezes where poetry and prayer carry the full living truth of existence, insofar as we can know it.
